Partners and Funders

Cumbria Nutrient Neutrality is a partnership project between Westmorland and Furness Council, Cumberland Council and Lake District National Park Authority.

About the partnership

Cumbria NN focuses on developing mitigation solutions for housing needs in four affected catchments. Our key objectives include fostering collaboration, assessing action needs, commissioning research, managing the Local Nutrient Mitigation Fund (LNMF) and supporting developers in the planning process.

Westmorland and Furness Council oversees the funding.

Advisors

Cumbria NN works with Eden Rivers Trust, The Environment Agency Natural England, South Cumbria Rivers Trust, United Utilities, West Cumbria Rivers Trust, local planning authorities and other partners to identify and promote strategic mitigation options and solutions across affected catchments. Many of these organisations are represented on a regular advisory panel, which helps guide the direction and delivery of the programme.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government supports the Nutrient Neutrality project.

Funded by the
UK Government

The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government awarded £16.21 million to the Cumbria Nutrient Neutrality Partnership from the Local Nutrient Mitigation Fund. This funding will create Nutrient Neutrality mitigation credits and advance stalled housing developments.

The partnership’s three local authorities aim to unlock around 13,000 homes impacted by nutrient neutrality requirements, thanks to the £16.4 million government grant. Read the full press release.
